Understanding “Our Key 7” Flooring Types

Hardwood flooring is a classic choice that brings warmth and unique character to any room. Known for its durability and timeless appeal, hardwood is ideal for living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms. However, it may not be the best choice for areas prone to moisture, like bathrooms or basements.  Modern hardwood manufacturers have made great advancements in topcoat durability; however, they still remain subject to scratches, dents, and other surface damage so may not be the best choice for homes with young children, pets, or high traffic areas.

Engineered Hardwood is a modern choice that brings unique character to any room.  Known for its increased durability over its counterpart, engineered options now offer the same “finish-layer” as the solid option.  Keep in mind that real wood products can only be sanded/refinished a finite number of times before the tongue/groove area is reached, but modern engineered offer solution impregnated top layers that harden the surface to better control scratches, dents, and moisture penetration.  Many engineered options offer enhanced cupping control and better sound mitigation than their solid counterparts, but this comes at an increased cost.

Laminate flooring is a cost-effective alternative that replicates the look of many modern floor covering options including hardwood, stone, ceramic, polished concrete. It is offered in various thicknesses and top-coat wear-layer options that are highly resistant to scratches and easy to maintain, making it a great choice for high-traffic areas like hallways and playrooms. However, it is generally not as long-lasting as hardwood and can be susceptible to bottom-up water damage.  Many products are advertised as waterproof and do perform accordingly but it is best to inquire with us about your specific product choice and application for maximum longevity and durability.

Broadloom Carpet flooring is offered as roll goods of varying widths (12’, 13’6”, 15” being most common) offers comfort and warmth that’s perfect for bedrooms or living rooms. It comes in a variety of colors, patterns, and textures, and pile weights to fit any décor. However, it requires regular cleaning and may not be suitable for allergy sufferers or households with pets.

Carpet Tile is offered in various sizes and still offers the comfort and warmth of broadloom carpet while also allowing the ease of changeability for damaged or stained areas.  Similar to a laminate floor, individual ‘tiles’ can be removed and replaced in sections, rather than having to cut, replace, and seam sections as needed with broadloom goods.  Common installations include commercial hallways, conference rooms, office suites, storefronts, etc.  Carpet tiles are an incredible option for high traffic corridors, senior living facilities, or any areas subject to staining/damage/etc.

Revered as the gold standard for high-traffic, long-lasting, and most serviceable floor covering of modern time, Vinyl Composition Tile remains an industry leader for industrial, commercial, and institutional spaces.  VCT flooring systems can last decades with proper scheduled maintenance thanks to their ability to be waxed for ultimate damage resistance.  VCT may be one of the longest standing flooring options, but designs/colors/textures/patterns offerings are constantly evolving to keep up with the latest design trends.   VCT flooring excels in high-traffic and high-rolling load applications.
